What’s a 3D digital impression?

We use an intraoral scanner to create a detailed 3D image of your mouth and teeth. It’s a much faster, more accurate approach, that also eliminates the gooey residue and gagging reflex often experienced with a traditional dental impression.

I’ve always used a boil and bite (over the counter) mouthguard. Why should I get a custom mouthguard?

Boil and bite mouthguards don’t protect your teeth. They’re also usually uncomfortable to wear and loosely fitted. According to the Australian Dental Association (ADA), the only way to protect your teeth, is to wear a custom fitted mouthguard, made by a dental professional.

Why can’t I do the DIY kits at home?

It’s almost impossible to take an impression of your own mouth without dental experience. Unless your mouthguard is fitted with a perfect impression or 3D digital scan taken by a dental professional, you’re likely to be wasting your time and money.

What materials are used to make a mouthguard?

The primary material we use is Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA), which is a high impact medical grade material. All materials are food safe, FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved and meet Australia’s thorough regulatory requirements. They’re also Latex and BPA free.

How long should my mouthguard last?

Your mouthguard should be checked by a dental professional at every dental check-up to make sure the proper fit is still in place. Children should have their mouthguards checked every 6 months in case there have been any changes to their teeth or mouths. A well-maintained mouthguard usually lasts several years.

How do I care for my mouthguard?

Every Command Mouthguard comes with instructions for how to look after them. Follow these and your mouthguard should stay in excellent condition for years:

  • Rinse with warm (not hot) water before and after each use and let it air dry.

  • Clean with soapy water or mouthwash to help disinfect.

  • Keep in a well-ventilated container, out of direct sunlight (which could distort your mouthguard and reduce its protection).

  • Ask your dentist to inspect your mouthguard at every dental check-up.

  • Avoid using the dishwasher to clean your mouthguard.

  • Do not machine wash or tumble dry your mouthguard as it distorts in high temperatures.

Can I still get a custom-fitted mouthguard if I just lost a tooth or about to lose a tooth?

Yes, you can. Our scans can see where teeth are missing and teeth that are about to erupt, with our dental technicians adjusting your mouthguard accordingly. Considering childrens’ mouths are constantly changing, we also offer (same season) free adjustments.

Can I still get a custom-fitted mouthguard if I have braces?

You can. It’s important to invest in a custom-fitted mouthguard, which will be molded around the braces and brackets for the best possible protection.

What happens if my child missed the initial 3D digital impression session?

We can always get a scan of your child when we return for the fitting appointment, then set another date for the fitting.

What happens if I cannot be present for my child’s first appointment and I want to claim on my health fund?

A parent or an authorised guardian needs to be present so they can give consent for the procedure and authorise health fund claims and payments. We won’t be able to go ahead without a parent or an authorised guardian there to sign consent forms.

Which health funds are covered for instant rebate with Command Mouthguards?

We provide instant rebates for most of the major health funds - and are constantly adding new health funds to the list. You’ll still be able to claim through your health fund if it isn’t online yet.
